AUSTIN CHAPTER 10
IZAAK WALTON LEAGUE OF AMERICA
Ramsey Mill Pond Wildlife Management Area
Austin Chapter 10 began acquiring parcels in the Mill Pond Area in 1972. Within
22 years, the Chapter had acquired 200 acres. In 1994, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources acquired the property from
the Chapter through the Reinvest in Minnesota Critical Habitat Match Program. In 1997, Chapter 10, with assistance from the
Minnesota Deer Hunters Association and the Tri-County Pheasants Forever Chapter, entered into a contract for deed for 90 acres of
grassland that was adjacent to the 200-acre parcel. These 90 acres were in the Conservation Reserve Program. The MN DNR,
through the RIM Critical Habitat Program, purchased the 90 acres from Chapter 10 in 1999.
This Wildlife Management Area provides
habitat for deer, pheasants, turkeys, ducks, geese and many other forms of wildlife that thrive in grasslands, flood plain forest
and wetlands. It is open to the public for hunting, fishing, hiking, birding, and exploring.
Located three
miles north of Austin on County Road 61.
